OJ Mayo will have a chance to be the man in Milwaukee. After averaging 15.3 points, 4.4 assists, and 3.5 rebounds while starting in every game last season with the Dallas Mavericks, Mayo will bring his smooth stroke and offensive game to the Bucks. Mayo was one of the top free agent shooting guards this summer which also included former Buck Monta Ellis and Thunders guard Kevin Martin. Ellis eventually signed with the Dallas Mavericks for about $25 million over 3 seasons while Martin joined the Timberwolves for about $30 million over 4 years. The Bucks might have hit the Castle Jackpot after signing Mayo to a very reasonable three-year, $24 million contract.
What fans of the Bucks should be excited about is the flashes of greatness Mayo showed for the Mavs when Dirk Nowitzki was out early in the season. Mayo averaged over 20 points while shooting close to 53% from the 3 point line during the first month of the season, including a 40 point game. He scored in double figures in 63 games last season. Mayo not only brings a nice offensive game but he has shown to be able to defend as well.
With Ellis signing with the Dallas Mavericks and guards Brandon Jennings and J.J. Reddick being traded, Mayo will have every opportunity to shine for the Bucks in the backcourt, along with newly acquired guard Brandon Knight. It will be a rebuilding season for the Bucks but signing Mayo for 3 seasons is a good first step. Remember, Mayo is only 25 and has been known to have a great work ethic that can rub off on his teammates and the franchise in need of a star to call their own. And he’s got a pretty manly beard to boot.
