December 30th, 2006 · No Comments

Huntington High (7-0) cruised to a 104-38 boys basketball victory Friday night against Greenbrier East (2-4). O.J. Mayo scored a season-high 39 points and had nearly a dozen steals — in their seventh victory by 32 points or more.

“I just let the game come to me and not try to force the action,” Mayo said. “We just played hard and got out in transition for some easy buckets.”

OJ Mayo on his Future

December 23rd, 2006 · 1 Comment

“I plan on making a living at this. I know that’s going to be a lot of hard work and determination. But I feel like that’s why I was born and put on this Earth, to be a leader, to be one of the greatest basketball players to ever play and to be a great example and role model for the kids and for different people out there who look up toward me.” – O.J. Mayo

OJ Mayo One and Done

December 23rd, 2006 · No Comments

The New York Times has an article about college offering attractive pit stops on way to N.B.A. Check out what they had to say about Mayo:

In Mayo’s case, he made sure to find a place that could help him the most. U.S.C. did not recruit him last year; instead, he called Floyd, who said he was nearly speechless.

College coaches typically spend hours swooning over talented prospects like Mayo. But in this case, Mayo had a shopping list for his one-year college stopover. Mayo told Floyd he wanted to play for someone with N.B.A. coaching experience, which Floyd had with Chicago and New Orleans. Mayo also wanted to put his stamp on a program, like Patrick Ewing did at Georgetown in the 1980s, not perpetuate the established legacy of a perennial basketball powerhouse like U.C.L.A. or Connecticut.

He also wanted the marketing benefits of being in Los Angeles, much as quarterback Matt Leinart and running back Reggie Bush tapped before him in the Trojans’ football program.

Mayo is so talented, Floyd said, it would be “irresponsible” to even ask him to return for a second season. He is thrilled just to have Mayo, considered by many recruiters to be the top player in the class of 2007, for one. An ancillary benefit is that Mayo has already attracted other talented recruits, including Brandon Jennings, a Los Angeles native and player for Oak Hill (Va.) Academy who is regarded as the top point guard in the high school class of 2008. Jennings will probably not even play alongside Mayo.

OJ Mayo on his Own

December 22nd, 2006 · No Comments

The Los Angeles Times today wrote a nice article on O.J. Mayo and Bill Walker. Both have been playing together since they were young.

For so long, it seemed as if Bill Walker and O.J. Mayo would be together from diapers to dentures.

“Me and O.J. have been friends since Pampers,” said Walker, who grew up in Huntington, W.Va., a few blocks from Mayo, his best basketball buddy.

As boys, they played against each other from the time they could dribble until joining forces at age 9. They played on the same traveling team and even attended the same out-of-state high school, Cincinnati’s North College Hill, where they combined to win two state titles.

“We’re basically the same person,” Mayo said.
