USC Trojan, O.J. Mayo is in a familiar position. Ranked #1 on the Scout.com Final 100 from the Class of 2007. Mayo has been at or near the top of his class throughout his much hyped about high school career. Mayo, who is projected to be the starting point guard for USC, joins a Trojan team that has lost starters Nick Young and Gabe Pruitt to the NBA draft. Rounding out the top 5 were Michael Beasley, Kevin Love, Eric Gordon, and Derrick Rose.

WeAreSC columnist Erik McKinney had a question and answer session with USC head coach Tim Floyd. Among the interesting points was what O.J. Mayo did on his official visit to USC. No, not a night out of town with Nick Young and Gabe Pruitt. Instead, he was shooting in the gym:

He came in here on his visit, you’ll love this. I mean, I love everything about him, from a coach’s standpoint. He comes in here on his visit and we go to a dinner. He’s trying to be socially interactive with his student host, I forget who. It may have been Gabe and Nick out with us that night. But he’s trying to carry on conversation. He’s a little socially awkward because he’s spent his whole life in a gym, you know? He comes over to me after the meal and he says, coach do you have Rob’s number? Rob’s my manager. I said, “Yeah I got it.” He asked for it and I said yeah. So Gabe and Nick wanted to take him out on the town after the meal, but he asked them to take him back to campus. He meets up with Rob and goes up and shoots in the gym from midnight until 3:00 in the morning on his official visit. I love that stuff. I love it. I’ve never been around a guy like that. That’s why he’s got a chance to be great.

Remember the much published about incident involving O.J. Mayo and the Flopping Referee? According to the Charleston Daily Mail, the part time referee involved has been sentenced to jail for six months for the battery of a jail counselor and is already awaiting sentencing for attempted murder.
