From Andy Katz’s blog on ESPN:
No games have been played, no heavy class load is being undertaken, and there are probably limited distractions since it’s only summer school.
Still, O.J. Mayo is adjusting quite nicely to life at USC so far.
USC coach Tim Floyd said Mayo has been “terrific” since he has been on campus. Floyd isn’t talking about his game, since he can’t go watch him under NCAA rules. He means Mayo has simply been doing everything he is supposed to do so far.
Floyd said Mayo is playing with the pros at UCLA in the morning and then with USC players in the afternoon. He’ll start lifting next week. Summer school is on tap next week too. He said Mayo has shown an interest in school, but Floyd said he’s “not delusional since we’ll probably only have him for a year.”
Meanwhile, the other studs of one of the top-rated recruiting classes are all making their way toward USC. Davon Jefferson is on target to be eligible so far. Floyd said that Angelo Johnson and Mamadou Diarra should be in summer school too.
As for the highest-profile returnee, sophomore forward Taj Gibson, Floyd said he has already added 16 pounds to his slender frame. If Gibson can be more of a force in the post, especially with the loaded frontcourts in the Pac-10 next season, then the Trojans should have a shot at a top-four finish.
Floyd had no issues with my pick of the Trojans being at 21 in the latest pre-preseason Top 25. He said he wouldn’t be surprised if the Trojans dropped out of the Top 25 as they find their footing earlier in the season.
